Monate PGR does not only constitute a wonderful escape to nature for its shareholders but the reserve actively partners various conservation efforts on many fronts.
Rooiberg Bewaria
Monate PGR has been an active member of the Rooiberg Bewaria since 2012. Where possible, Monate PGR members support the Rooiberg Bewaria with fund raising efforts, donations and know how. The Rooiberg Bewaria is a Public Benefit Organisation encompassing the majority of the privately owned land between Thabazimbi and Bela Bela. The Bewaria’s aim and purpose is to promote the environmental protection and safe keeping of the fauna and flora of the area for the benefit of all species, people, and future generations.
Monate Brown Hyena Project
The Monate Brown Hyena Project was established on the reserve in 2014. This Project aims to acquire data and insight into this near threatened species on Monate PGR and its neighbouring properties. The project looks at the ethology of Brown Hyena as well as their environmental utilisation.
On a more practical note it also helps other property owners relocate individuals that may find themselves in distress, or in areas where they are not welcomed. With this special research project we aim not only to protect the species but also to inform the general public about the plight of the Brown Hyena.
Wildlife Monitoring and Guest Environmental Education
Wildlife monitoring on the reserve is being done with the help of VHF collars on certain carnivores and other near threatened species. Plans are afoot to implement a LoRA network in the not too distant future which should enhance our capabilities tremendously.
Student Mentorship
In 2022 Monate PGR joined hands with the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) to make a position available to mentor one of their third year nature conservation students as part of the institution’s work integrated learning (WIL) programme. Since then, the Monate PGR management team has successfully mentored one student per year. Thanks to the success of this partnership a second student position will now be available to be implemented in 2025. Monate PGR is committed to education and skills development. With this dedicated initiative we can put our commitment to action.
